2015
YMCA of Greater Toronto’s Wagner Green YMCA (formerly Vanauley Street YMCA) near Queen Street West and Spadina Avenue, opened its door in February 2015 as part of their goal to fundamentally reshape and rebuild our communities with centres that will become the heart of healthy neighbourhoods and the lifeblood of a strong future for the city.
The 11,400 sq. ft. centre offers supportive programs and services for at-risk street-engaged youth through a drop-in centre, medical and counselling services, and employment programs. The project also integrates a 38 bed emergency shelter, YMCA House, on a tight urban site in downtown Toronto.
Sleeping rooms provide two beds per room with integrated washroom to provide dignity and privacy to the youth. Post-occupancy studies showed a much higher level of engagement by youth in schooling & employment than with the previous dorm model.
