Sagatay is a renovation of an existing medical clinic into a 22 bed transitional residence for aboriginal men. It provides men one year of residential space, dignity and healing to plan jointly with advocates the next stages of their life journeys.
HAI designed the building after extensive consultation with the individuals and groups committed to realizing the first long term residential, healing and life planning space for Aboriginal men in Toronto. The project is located on Vaughan Road, which runs diagonal to the colonial street grid and historically was an aboriginal trail along the top bank of Lake Iroquios.
The building is oriented in an east-west direction, representing in aboriginal tradition the life journey of birth to death. The residence was developed and is operated by the Native Men’s Residence (Na-Me-Res) and was funded by a partnership between the City of Toronto and the Government of Canada.
A resident offered the name for the building: Sagatay, “A new beginning”.
