The Hub, mid-Scarborough

Toronto

2010

The Hub, mid-Scarborough was the first of a new model of integrated service delivery hubs, initially for West Hill Community Services, now Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC). The project provides a range of programs and services under one roof—including community health and dental services, career planning and employment counselling, addiction and mental health services, as well as diabetes education, health promotion and services for seniors.

It was challenging to secure a site within the catchment area with most options being commercial type “strip” shopping plazas. The new site was one such building with the additional challenge of locating the majority of space in a virtually windowless basement. A two storey living wall ties the ground floor of the facility to the basement CHC, bringing natural daylighting from the atrium above, and the rejuvenating scents of the plants and the tranquil sounds of the adjacent water feature to the reception and waiting area of the CHC.

The upper level includes the main community engagement spaces such as the community kitchen, lounge, and larger program rooms.
