Sandgate Transitional Housing
Town of Georgina, Ontario
Approvals Stage
Sandgate Women’s Shelter is a charitable, feminist organization dedicated to empowering all persons who identify as women and their children through safe shelter, resources, information and advocacy in order to eliminate violence in their lives.
Sandgate is expanding their existing transitional housing units with a new-build, 10-unit transitional housing project. The new deeply-affordable housing will support women and their children in moving out of shelter, and help to prepare families for mainstream housing.
The project consists of 5 one-bedroom units and 5 studio units, along with a common space for counselling and social activities. 20% of the units will be fully barrier-free, along with the common space. Trauma-informed design is a guiding principle, aiming to create secure, comfortable spaces that are easy to navigate and offer inhabitants agency, community and the ability to heal from past trauma. The building is designed to integrate into the surrounding coastal community, offering shared porches for social interactions, a community gathering circle and rain gardens for therapeutic access to green space.
Currently in the approvals process, construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2026.
