An ongoing project in the office, the Philip Aziz Centre's Children's Hospice, the first of its kind in Toronto and one of six in Canada, will meet the needs of families and children living with the challenges of a life-limiting illness such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. This Home will provide increased respite options for families and a choice of setting for medical/respite care.

YWCA Elm Centre

Presently under construction, with completion slated for Spring 2011, this 300 unit affordable and supportive housing project is located in Toronto between Edward Street, Elm Street, Elizabeth Street and Chestnut Street, south of Sick Children's Hospital.

The project includes the restoration of the remnants of an 1848 House of Industry, and construction of new housing with a 200 seat lecture hall, a restaurant, a boutique, an Aboriginal Economic Resource Centre and head offices for YWCA Toronto and YWCA Canada.

The building will harness a large geoexchange well field below the site, using ground source heat pumps coupled with radiant slab heating and cooling and energy recovery ventilation systems. A large central courtyard and rooftop green roofs provide outdoor amenity space for the tenants.

YWCA Toronto initiated the project in partnership with Wigwamen Incorporated and Jean Tweed Centre. We are working with regional Architects on the project.

The Hub mid-Scarborough

West Hill Community Services held the official opening of their new United Way-funded Community Hub, the first such hub in the Toronto area, with West Hill Community Health Centre's new satellite CHC and a range of other social service providers on January 19, 2010.

The project provides a range of programs and services under one roof—including community health and dental services, career planning and employment counselling, addiction and mental health services, as well as diabetes education, health promotion and services for seniors.

Four Villages Community Health Centre Dundas Site

Four Villages Community Health Centre opened their Dundas Street Site to offer services to the community in January of 2010. This satellite increases access to health care for families, youth 13 - 24 years old and seniors, especially those living alone and with mobility problems residing in the Gooch-Cooper Mills, The Junction and North High Park communities.

The facility, which includes a community kitchen, program and meeting space, is set into a renovated warehouse, making extensive use of daylighting from clerestories and skylights.

40 Oaks

Located at 40 Oak Street in Toronto's Regent Park, this new building for Toronto Christian Resource Centre will provide 87 residential suites from bachelor to 2-bedrooms in size. The main floor will accommodate a multi-service hub that provides support space for the broader community, together with residential amenity space and a place of worship.

Project is being designed to meet the City’s Green Development Standard, and may seek LEED Silver/Gold certification.

The project is due for construction start shortly following confirmation of financing.

Green Phoenix Tower Renewal

Parkdale United Church Foundation maintains a housing-based ministry in an existing 11 storey apartment tower containing 136 affordable housing units constructed in 1976 in Parkdale.

Green Phoenix is a phased project that has created ten new affordable housing units within an existing adjacent low-rise building formerly used for offices, and has provided the entire site with a new geoexchange ground source heat pump heating and cooling system, and a solar-assisted domestic water system. Phase 2 is now complete, with the retrofit of the existing tower for greater energy efficiency.

A third phase will add an additional 11 affordable housing units and amenity space and a church expansion around the north and west sides of the base of the tower.

The project received a City of Toronto Award of Excellence as a finalist in the 2007 Green Toronto Awards.

Na-Me-Res Sagatay Transitional Housing

Na-Me-Res opened their new Sagatay (new beginnings) transitional housing project in April of 2009.

This new 18 unit, 22-bed transitional housing project at 26 Vaughan Road creates a place of healing and dignity in a culturally responsive design with strong aboriginal symbology.

The $1.76 million project, below budget, supports the traditional culture of the residents and at the same time attempts to ameliorate the buildings relationship with the city.

YWCA Bergamot Affordable Housing

This 68 unit affordable housing project of approximately 74,000 SF including a 5,250 SF child care centre was completed and occupied in September of 2007.

The project, built for YWCA Toronto, provides a mix of one-bedroom through four-bedroom suites for women-led households, and includes indoor and outdoor amenity space.

The building incorporates an energy efficient design and envelope, and was designed to exceed 25% better than MNECB energy performance and was designed to accommodate future solar DHW installation.

Wigwamen Sewells Road Affordable & Transitional Housing

Located at 20 Swells Road in the Malvern Community in Scarborough, this project saw the creation of a 92 new units affordable housing. It consists of approximately 92,000 SF of building on a city owned site, and was completed in 2006.

The building is configured as a four storey transitional and family housing apartment building with 2-storey ground-related units, worship space and associated amenity areas provided with partial below grade parking and extensive landscaping.

We developed the project from concept to start of construction, including site plan application and committee of adjustment, in approximately one year. The building incorporates an energy efficient design and envelope, recipient of CBIP funding.

On November 6, 2006 our 20 Sewells Road affordable housing project for Wigwamen Inc. was the recipient of a Best Practices in Affordable Housing award from CMHC.

Bethlehem United Shelter

Bethlehem United Shelter, a new 60 bed shelter for homeless men, women and couples, operated by Fred Victor Centre, was completed in December 2007. The shelter is set within a former industrial building, half of which is an existing church.

The shelter provides 24 hour accommodation for residents, support space, and an industrial kitchen capable of serving the shelter and 250 people in the adjacent church banquet hall.

Yonge Street Mission Community Centre

This project involved the renovation and addition to an existing community centre with child care facilities at 270 Gerrard Street East in Toronto, It was completed in 2004. The project brought an existing precast concrete clad building that was set back quite a distance from and raised above street level, out to the street edge, creating a more accessible and visually open nature to the centre.

Parkdale Activity Recreation Centre

The renovation of the Parkdale Activity-Recreation Centre, (PARC) a Mental Health Community Centre providing psycho-social support and recreational programs to consumer/survivors living in the West Toronto area, was completed in the summer of 2000.

One of the more interesting aspects of the project has been the extensive use of PARC members as part of the construction team, including for the painting of these spaces. The windows between interior offices have been reclaimed from the building's exterior and stripped and refinished by PARC members as part of the work. In addition to office space for other non-profit agencies on the second floor, the project also provides ten units of housing on the third floor for formerly homeless people, and a community kitchen on the ground floor.
